Your bedroom should be an oasis — a soothing space where you can count on a good night’s sleep. Sometimes that means a new mattress, but sometimes, a headboard can completely transform the look and feel of your bedroom while adding style, luxury and comfort to your space. Instead of heading to the furniture store to buy an out-of-box headboard, you can easily improvise and make one yourself using some basic building supplies.
Design expert Andrew Pike created a stunning glossy black headboard with metal accents for a recent “Cute Bedroom Makeover” segment on the Marilyn Denis Show. For an absolutely elegant and bold statement, Pike installed numerous Taymor Satin Aluminum door kickplates on a simple slab door framed by crown moulding. By creatively visualizing building materials installed in unconventional ways, such as a door mounted horizontally and kickplates installed vertically, Pike completely flipped the script on how products should be used and created something spectacular.
You can make this DIY mantle style headboard at home and customize the design to suit your style. Repurpose a simple slab door by cutting it to size and mounting it to the wall horizontally. Add dimension to the headboard with crown moulding panels installed along the top edge, then paint or stain the door and moulding whatever color you prefer. For extra design appeal, adorn the headboard with metal kickplates installed vertically. “Metal details are so hot right now and expensive on furniture but these are [Taymor kickplates] just $30–$35 dollars and also available in Satin Nickel, Aged Bronze and Polished Brass,” said Pike. The added detail of the metal kickplates injects another layer of drama to your room and you can choose them in a finish to match the rest of your bedroom decor.
